My top 10 non-horror

So earlier today I posted my best of 2018 horror but it seems like I watched an open pallet of movies this year. And Documentary's seem to have lead the charge along with those Superheroes! No keep in mind I'm always behind in my movies (Dang kids and job) so things like Solo and Aquaman will hopefully make next years list. Ok, so let's get started.

5) Basketcase
4) Theater of Blood
3) Mudbound
2) To Hell ANd Back
1) Florida Project

and as time goes by Pooka just might have to pass up Basketcase. In the end, I'm just glad to have met my goal of 52 movies. Maybe for 2019, I will shot for 100 we will see.

RIP Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor

I rarely post about someone leaving us here on earth but last nights news hit this family pretty hard. Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor, keyboardist and vocalist in Walk Off the Earth, has died, the band has confirmed. It's hard because as a family watching music videos on a Friday night we bumped into this band for the first time. We became instant fans and Beard Guy was by far a big reason for that, the man oozed cool.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and band member, Mike 'Beard Guy' Taylor. Mike had a love for life that was unmatched and a willingness to give that went beyond ordinary means. He passed peacefully from natural causes last night in his sleep. Our deepest sympathies are with his two children, whom he adored more than anything else in the world. We ask for privacy for his family in this trying time."

Walk off the Earth is a Canadian indie pop band, known for their well-crafted cover songs on YouTube as well as originals including recent single "Fifth Avenue," was scheduled to perform on New Year's Eve in Niagara Falls for CBC before kicking off a world tour.

On Christmas Mike left all of us one more gift.

"hands down my favorite Christmas song" Mike "The Beard Guy" such a blow and this family thanks you for bring us some joy we will miss you.

The Best of 2018

Ok so here you go the top horror movies I watched in 2018. Please note these are not just new tiles just the ones I watched and felt where the best of the best.

Number 10

(Review here)
Eebee is back in the Seventh in the franchise and they seem to get better as they go!

But I had to call it a tie with this one...

(Review here)
Was kind of hard not to include MicroWave massacre as it was also the highest viewed post of the year as well.

Number 9

(Review here)

So crazy! This one stuck with me for a few weeks after!

Number 8

I'm so glad I spent most of my year watching what people call classics!

Number 7

Judge me all you want I really liked this movie. Anytime a horror flick can make you laugh and forget about the crap reality around you its a good flick in my book. Plus Thomas C Howell is pretty hot in this one.

Number 6

I love Witches they are my favorite part of Halloween and when your favorite podcast Shock Waves talked about it I shot to the top of my list for the brisk fall season.

Number 5

Just like Killer Donuts Plan 9 was a loose adaptation of the original was just plain and simple fun!

Number 4

If you have not seen Ghostwatch you are missing out! And it takes place on Halloween so yeah watch it!

Number 3

I know that I have not had a chance to watch most of the 2018 hits yet like Halloween or Hereditary but out of the new movies from this year Pooka really moved me. If you have Hulu do not let the Christmas theme stop you check it out today.

Number 2

As most of you know Joe Bob Brigg's hosting again on Shudder was one of the biggest news stories of the year for Horror Fans. And with Basketcase being on my bucket list for far too long this was a win-win for me! And a slap to the head wondering why I waited so dang long to watch this one.

Number 1

Wow, this one moved me and has resonated in my mind for months. I love Price and was given this VHS as a gift and it sure was! The colors, story, acting it was all amazing. So as you can see older movies are still better than today's flare.  And trust me I know this list is without A Quiet Place, Halloween, and The Shape of Water all tiles I really wanted to watch. And those are on the top of my list for 2019!!

Pooka see, Pooka do, Pooka me, Pooka you

Pooka!
2018 | 1 Hr 23 Min | TV-MA | Horror | Hulu
Director: Nacho Vigalondo

Writer: Gerald Olson

Stars:
Nyasha Hatendi
Latarsha Rose
Jon Daly

A struggling actor takes on a seasonal holiday job as the mascot for the year's hottest new toy: Pooka. However, after putting the costume on, he develops two personalities - one for himself, and one for Pooka.

Holy Sh%t is there anything that Blumhouse can do wrong right now? With The Purge, Happy Death Day, Paranormal Activity and of course this year's huge hit Halloween everything seems to be going the right way for our favorite Hollywood studio! Pooka does a crazy job of wrapping itself around the Christmas Carol storyline that you just don't see it coming.

And this Nacho guy who is he? The only thing that rings a bell on his resume is ABC's of Death but in my, mind Pooka should be his springboard! The way he takes this dark story and splashes color of red and blue driving you to end of the movie is downright brilliant! And Gerald Olson with only three scripts to his name how is that? He does a fantastic job gluing you down to your seat even though Pooka is a real slow burn! And thanks to a fun cast and a crazy looking mascot that is incredibly creepy at times and somehow absolutely hilarious at others.  Oh and that theme song is sure to get stuck in your head. “Pooka see, Pooka do, Pooka me, Pooka you.” so enjoy that I know I did all last night while I laid awake thinking about what I just witnessed earlier in the evening.

I just don't want to give anything away but I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed Pooka!. The story deserves so much more attention, but I again don't want to spoil it. Pooka is perfectly dark and twisted, the cast is fantastic and Pooka himself is the perfect mix of everything stuck in your childhood mind of Christmas a long time ago. If you’re looking for something creepy to watch this holiday season, look no further than Pooka!. This was the most fun I had in a long time and will be part of my Christmas season must watch for years to come.

4 Bloody Brains out of 5

Find out who you are and do it on purpose.

Dumplin'
2018 | 1 HR 50 Min | PG-13 | Comedy | Netflix
Director: Anne Fletcher

Writers:
Kristin Hahn
Julie Murphy

Stars:
Danielle Macdonald
Jennifer Aniston
Odeya Rush

Synopsis:
Willowdean ('Dumplin'), the plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, signs up for her mom's Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.

Everyone is so busy talking about Netflix's Bird Box they just might be missing out on this tender coming of age flick Dumplin' or are they. With strong performances from Aniston and Danielle Macdonald can’t save this conventional pageant saga that seems to be centered around the music from Dolly Parton. In a house full of girls this was the movie of choice last night and even if the movie never really gets into second gear its message is important and not shoved down your throat.

Dumplin' is a big-hearted dramedy about an overweight teenager who finds herself by way of Dolly Parton. There is fun to be had, as in a scene where a cheerful group of Texan drag queens performs some of Ms. Parton’s greatest hits. But as a coming-of-age tale, a comedy of southern pageantry, or a story of mother-daughter reconciliation, it is well boring. Giving the sensation of having seen it all before, only this time with more glitter and higher hair. It's a story worth telling just at a staggering and very predictable pace.

Dumplin’ is more often a film loudly announcing its noble intentions with slogans instead of dialogue: “A protest in heels”, “Every body is a swimsuit body” and as if inching toward self-awareness, “Hey hey, ho ho, patriarchy has got to go.” That’s a message to get behind, as is Aniston’s superfluous southern accent and the ascent of Macdonald. The movie, however, not so much.

Sorry Dumplin'

3 out 5

Are these the Worst Video Games of 2018?

So earlier today I gave you my top five games for this year so now let us take a quick look at the worst. Three of these games we really looked forward to playing and they just fell short and one made me so mad I could not even talk about how I  wasted 30 bucks! So here you go...

Number 5

Oh man, this was a hard one I was so excited to play this old-school platformer. Sadly it fell short for me it was not the worst thing I played but one that was a disappointment. This 3D platformer was a bit lacking in challenge and variety. I do hope Super Lucky's Tale continues into the future as the world of video games is lacking in a new mascot.

Number 4

What is it that has gamers going insane over Fortnite? I will admit the Thanos season was fun but that was it for me. Between the media, overhype, and youtuber's this lame game has become this year's big deal. And those poor parents with kids that have fallen into addiction playing this game, man! I have heard some really scary stories, for example, one of my buddies kids got so upset after losing he punched a hole in the wall. And if that was not bad enough when he was allowed to have the joystick back after a week he lost again this time throwing his remote through his tv. Crazy!! This game was not for me.

Number 3

While we are at it lets talk about how boring and sad Playerunkown's Battlegrounds was. And its to bad because I had high hopes for this one, I'm not going to give up on it yet, but it is so boring I can not stick with it. At this point, Fortnite is a little better and a lot more fun to play.

Number 2

Oh, Hellow Neighbor we still can not thank you enough for ruining our Halloween. See this became available on Xbox Game Pass the week of the great holiday so we waited for Halloween night to kick back as a family to play this over-hyped train wreck. Neighbor is a stealth game with frustrating AI, horrible controls, and game-breaking bugs. We spent a few hours yelling at the screen but never accomplishing anything a good idea gone bad.

Oh man, here we go... the one game that pissed me off in so many ways...

The marking gang deserves a medal for this one! With the promise of updated gameplay, better mechanics (Last years game was good so I could not wait for this) and to play as Baseballs legends! Life was going to be good for this baseball fan and let me tell you I saved up my money to make this a first day buy and I don't do that so the burn was extra harsh this time around. This is simply not a very good baseball game and the higher price point of 30 dollars makes a sad year for RBI. The improved graphics don't do enough to save this from another sub-standard effort. This one crushed me! I know I will think twice for the 2019 season and for now will continue to play 2017 at least that one was fun in a small way.

So there you go the games that sucked the soul out of me this year. I know a game or two had to make you upset so let me know in the comments. And don't spew hate that I did not like Fortnite it's just not for everyone.

My Top Video Games Played In 2018

Wow, the end of 2018 drawers near and 2019 is ready to go! It's that time to take a look back on some of my favorite video games I played this year. This year I seemed to have played more games than usual logging in 42 new tiles yet picking my top 5 was pretty easy what was not easy ranking them one through five.

Number 5

Man what a crazy game Serial Cleaner turned out to be. This PC tile looks like a simple puzzle game but it is not! Drenched in a varnish of ‘70s retro stylings, from its funky soundtrack to its desaturated color palette, it’s incredibly aesthetically pleasing. This stealth game has you sneaking into a crime scene to clean up the blood, gather the evidence and bag the bodies. While the stealth mechanics are broadly similar to the cone-of-view Metal Gear Solid system; blunder into an enemy’s eye line and they’ll immediately pursue you. If they catch you, it’s instant death and back to the start of the level.

All though very frustrating for this simple gamer I would have to put down the joystick and walk away for a bit. But the whole time I can not stop thinking about the puzzle that I can not beat and end up back in the computer chair going at it again.

Number 4

State of Decay 2 seems to be a hit and miss with people on my end of the screen its a little of both. See when the game first starts out it is white-knuckle, balls to the wall zombie fest. As you gather your team and find a place to call home its time to grind it out with a long list of "To Do's". I simply could not put the controller down at first looking for food, ammo, health, and others to stay alive in its beautiful baron landscapes. Then the game turns on you and gets really hard for a simple gamer like me. All this did was make the old ticker beat faster and verbal obscenity flung at the tv screen, but I liked it!

Sadly the grind gets old fast and the lack of zombies gets old after while I like the building up your team aspect but sadly other games came along and took me out of the Decay that my State was in. The game looks good to play and honestly, I should go back and see what is going on with my team.

State of Decay 2 still stands tall as one of the best games I played this year.

Number 3

Friday the 13th is the second-spookiest day of the year, so when it rolled around back in April Jason fans where treated to Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle. With its light, silly, and utterly gore-drenched gameplay Killer Puzzle is a simple block-sliding puzzler dressed up as a slasher horror hooked on its splatter-rampage. He’s a good boy, really – listens to everything his mum tells him. What was really great about Killer Puzzle was Jason himself from all the flicks like Jason part 2 and Uber Jason from X. And if that's not enough you will also get a few other surprises along the way like Butcher Jason or Frozen Jason. And those cutscenes those glories blood splattered cutscenes!

For a free game, the challenge grows stronger never allowing it to get boring and challenging enough that you have to walk away from it even if just for a bit.  I'm pretty sure this is still a free download for the PC check it out here. Those poor poor campers.

Number 2

This is one of those games made for gamers like me with short races, simple controls, and easy layout and an open world letting me pick where to go next. And with some sweet rides, good tunes (although at one point I turned the radio off) and most of all Season's Forza 4 is a fun ride. In fact, when I first fired up my racing machine I was not impressed. Sure it looked good but the control took me a bit to get used to and honestly I just wanted to see all the seasons. So the other day I sat down to give this another spin trying to find my way to Autumn the greatest season of them all. As I was gliding through the races and time I found my self getting better at driving and started winning race after race. And once the leaves changed colors I was hooked. So hooked I played for almost 6 hours straight just to play through the final two seasons.

I was hooked no lie I just could not put the controller down, I get it the hype for this game is real and let me remind you I'm a simple gamer for those die hard's you can really tweak your car for an even better experience and yet here I was having a blast. Then I made it to winter and oh man the open world turned beautiful. From the colorful town's to the open rode Forza looks amazing and plays well. I'm glad I gave this one a second chance.

Drum roll, please...........

(Deep Voie) and now Number One!

Ask anybody that comes in contact with me from family to co-works to my faithful readers Stardew Valley is still my all-time favorite game and still played today! I have logged hundreds of hours into its gameplay and along comes Graveyard Keeper an edgy, much cooler, cousin of Stardew Valley. In this eerie sandbox style game, you take control of the Graveyard Keeper, an unnamed protagonist who is transported to this dark and gloomy world after a traffic accident. You are quickly introduced to your new best friend, the skeletal head of Gerry, who will help you out in getting started in your new morbid profession. After getting a lay of the land you will be introduced to comrade donkey, the capitalist hating, body transporter who will bring you fresh corpses regularly.

A majority of your time will be spent working all day gathering supplies from the surrounding area to bring back to your front yard and construct components for other crafts and items, then retiring to your home to sleep in your bed to regain energy and any health you have lost. The game has a multitude of characters and often they provide quests the progress the story and unlock new sections of the game. Often, these characters only come on a specific day of the 6-day week similar to Animal Crossing.

In fact, this game blends together Starwdew Valley and Animal Crossing very well giving it a simplistic in design and complex enough to get sucked in for hours at a time. The music is creepy and bouncy, like the perfect Halloween song you’ve never heard. The visuals are just as convincing, with rolling waves of fog, rainstorms, and all around a dark atmosphere of death that even during the daytime feels gloomy. I have thoroughly enjoyed all my time spent with this game and would recommend it to anyone looking for a low-stress virtual escape. Graveyard Keepers is by far the best game I played all year and as you can see I played a few great games this year. And even though I have not poured the hours into this one yet I will and plan on playing for hours over Christmas break!

Mr Keeper your simply the best!
