Derecho

Wow-what a month August has turned into! The past few weeks have been a whirlwind literally. We survived Derecho and two milestone birthdays and the dreaded first days of school. So what is a Derecho you might ask well it is a line of intense, widespread, and fast-moving windstorms and sometimes thunderstorms that moves across a great distance and is characterized by damaging winds.

August 10,2020 will be a day not soon forgotten around here it all started early in the early afternoon when the alerts started hitting our phones. Soon after I received a text from Lainey who was home alone asking when I would be leaving work. I promised her soon and would be home before the storm. Well man that storm moved in fast! I was in the parking lot looking at the sky letting her know I was on my way and the storm still looked far away. I was within a mile from home when the wind started to swirl around me. Mind you I live five minutes from work once that wind started the sirens started to whale and my foot hit the gas. I never drove that fast in my life but it was all about getting home to protect my family. I called around to family members telling them to seek shelter only to find out my oldest was stuck at Hobby Lobby. Fear started to set in as I pulled up to the house and the light poles around me started to shot out sparks! I ran into the house flew to the basement to check on Lainey and all we could hear from that point was snap, crackle, and thud everywhere.

We had tree limbs everywhere once the storm ended. You could not drive down our street and our neighborhood was pretty much shut down. We had over 100 power poles ripped from the ground, it was a war zone. After checking on the family making sure they where all ok I ran across the street to check on the neighbors. We are truly blown away by the damage but are grateful that everyone is ok.

Sadly I lost my car in the storm it was old but still running like a beast! Ella was really sad as it was going to be her car once her license was in. It was good to us she will be sadly missed.

As night started to fall it was quickly becoming clear we would not have power for a bit, and for the first night, it was kind of exciting. Thankfully it was a cool evening and rather fun to sit outside with neighbors talking and getting to know one another.

Tuesday August 11th, kicked off with clean up and man there was a ton of it. It also started to set in that the power was not coming on still and this started to bother the girls. In fact, the start of the school year was looming on Lainey's shoulders that she was not going to get a good night's sleep. As the day crept on we decided to reach out to friends that did have power and try to get as much food out of the fridge to be saved as we could.

Wednesday, August 12th the city has set up a dumpster for those of us still without power and it was time to clean out the fridge and the deep freezer. So sad we had just gone shopping on Sunday and with all the stocking up during the COVID (we used the extra money for from Erinn's unemployment for food) we ended up tossing well over $1,000 worth in the dumpster. It was sad really and it took us 3 trips. Also, today is my 50th Birthday and the kids are really bummed we can not do anything that was planned. We did make the best of it tho and that's all this guy needs. The weather was no longer cooperating with us as well sure 85 degrees does not sound hot but when you have no air movement it makes for a hard night of sleep. Ok, so we are starting to get a tad upset with the power, not at the company we get that they are working their butts offs. 8:00PM what is this? Is this the power company here to save the day?? Well... they came by looking at the damage came over to us and said "I'm so sorry folks there is nothing we can do tonight" we had so much damage around us that all they could do was clean up the wires and prepare for the next day. *sigh*

Thursday, August 13th and it was a rough night the house never really cooled off staying in the upper 70s all night long. It was also the first day of school with no power and no food in the house it made for an interesting send-off. But hey nothing a doughnut and milk from the gas station to start your day cant fix. I think this picture sums up August 2020, in a nutshell, wearing a mask to school tree damage in the background, yeah this one is for the books! They will be telling this story to their grandkids someday.

It's really hard to send your kids off to school during these trying times but this one is always full of joy and could not wait to get back. She has been away from school and friends for six months and she was ready to go.

Man Thursday was getting really bad the temps crept up to 90 degrees around 4o'clock we seemed to still be without hope. Finally, around 5 PM, the calvary showed up. It took them a while but shortly after 7, we had power! We cheered the linesmen and gave them huge Thank You and ran to close windows and turn on the A/C trying to cool off the house for the night. What a crazy week it has been.

Friday, August 14th the came to take my baby away. We bought this car when Ella was born because the car seat would not fit in our other car. So after sixteen years, this baby has seen a lot. It was really hard to say goodbye the car has been a beast. We felt safe handing it down to Ella when she could start driving.

Did the Derecho effect you? Let me know in the comments below. It was a crazy ride that we will talk about for years to come.

Of course  I made a video of the experience for my kids to have down the road. It's a bit boring but your welcome to check it out.

Tralala Terror! The Banana Splits Movie.

The Banana Splits Movie

2019 | R | 1 Hr 29 Min | Horror | Warner Brothers

Director: Danishka Esterhazy

Writers: Jed Elinoff, Scott Thomas

Stars: Dani Kind, Steve Lund, Celina Martin

Synopsis: A boy named Harley and his family (brother Austin, mother Beth, and step-father Mitch) attends a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But things take an unexpected turn -- and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom, and their new pals safely escape?

WWWWWWHAT a show from my childhood is coming back! So freaking cool or at least I had hoped so. I have to give Warner Brothers credit for going way outside of the box buy taking a kid's franchise from the 70s and giving them a dark side. And it works well I mean they were creepy when I was a young lad. I was just there for the Adam Ant cartoons. So give these guys a chance to go rogue and see what happens.

Let's clear something up first this movie is really flat for the first forty-five minutes to an hour. My reasoning for this comes down to the dull and stiff cast. This family is so depressing you just never get attached so when the shit finally hits the fan you're not invested. Part of what makes horror fun is your invested in the cast and your pulling for them. In this one you can't wait for them to die - that sounds so bad but it's true.

Once the carnage begins it never slows down allowing the last thirty minutes to be brutally fun. Some kills where cleaver and based on the show where others well they are fine but the whole time we had no tension to build upon thanks to those lame families.

For what its worth Banana Splits is a fun romp that is worth the look, last year this played on SyFy every day during the Halloween season so I'm sure they will bring it back this year. It's a good idea just takes time to develop.

3 Bloody Brains out of 5

New Funko Pops!

Funko just announced a few cool items. Still, not a huge collector of Funko but the McDonalds figures look fun.  And as of writing this, the Funko web site is old out!

I guess Chucky in a can is some type of mystery package and already I'm not sold on the look. But fest your eyes below!!

Look at that Minnie and Mickey!! Now, these just might find its way into the Man Cave! And it also looks like Hocus Pocus will get another run this year although they seem to have sold out as well.

October 24 Casper will finally be immortalized in plastic! Now this one might have to sit in the Man Cave for sure!

And a new wave of Simpson's Tree House of Horror is on its way.

So are you looking to pick any of these up? Do you collect Funko? Let me know in the comments.

The Mouseketeers At Walt Disney World

The Mouseketeers at Walt Disney World
1977 | G | 1 hour | Family | Disney

Director: John Tracy

Writers: Tom Adair, Tedd Anasti

Stars: Billy 'Pop' Atmore, Scott Craig, Lisa Whelchel

Synopsis:

Follow the Disco Mice of the New Mickey Mouse Club as they visit America's favorite vacation spot, Walt Disney World!

Oh, 1977 when Jimmy Carter was our leader, stamps where still .13 cents and gas was a whopping .62 cents a gallon. Star Wars was the movie of the year as well as Saturday Night Fever. Remember that Barry Manilow Live album yep 1977. I remember sitting around the boob tube like it was yesterday as Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, as well as Three's Company, kept us laughing. What we all seem to forget that its the year Disney seemed to try and revive their most famous kids show The Mickey Mouse Club.

The new show kicked off with an hour-long story that would easily take you through there vacation destination. Disney was no slouch when it came to cross-promoting their TV series with the parks. Sadly this did not lead to a resurgence of the show. But here we are in 2020 amidst a pandemic searching for those small things that would help make us happy once again. And that is where this show comes in.

This deep cut snuck its way onto Disney+ this past July to co-inside with the opening of Disney Lands 65th Aniversary. And yet this show was a ton of fun to watch unlike the Walt special "The Pre Opening Reports From Disneyland" that was released on the same day.

A few things really made this worth the watch first up the commercials are intact! We get those 70s Gaines-Burgers commercials along with Shake and Bake, a few different toy lines, and some really odd microwave that did not stand the test of time. This my friends hit on the nostalgia nerve making this so much more fun then it should have been.

That's Lisa with her thumbs in her pant loops and Julie left of Ronnie Schell.

The most notable star of the show was Lisa Whelchel’s in her first TV appearance, of course, she would go on to play “Blair” on the 80s sitcom "The Facts of Life". Julie Piekarski is here as well she was a background charter on "Facts of Life" as well as "Different Strokes". Unlike the 50s version as well as the 90s the 70s Club failed to produce any real young talent.

Jo Anne Worley turns up as a magazine reporter who starts following the group around looking for a hot scoop. Unfortunately, She finds herself in the middle of some drama that has taken over the clubhouse.  But this is where it also turns odd has Worley and Schell try to patch up the drama with the kids through the use of the parks. With that, we do get some of the mid-70s wonders of the Magic Kingdom, like River Country, Space Mountain, and Fort Wilderness. But sadly it's more Magic Kingdom and less of the kids.

Sadly the show turns really, really dark. To make things right they plan a camping trip at the wilderness lodge campground (More Disney advertising basically) where the kids are finally getting along. And then one of the girl's ties down the tents to some other mobile campers. Well, when they leave drama, comes flying back and it turns ugly. This was a very uncomfortable scene as they all get in this little girl's face yelling at her, picking on her, and pretty much bullying her. She runs away into the Magic Kingdom where the songs fail to make you feel any better. The group quickly learns their lesson and we move on to find the girl and do the one show they are there to perform.

Outside of those amazing commercials, we are treated to some nice moments through song, dance, that bring on those warm fuzzies. Like I said earlier this is pure nostalgia at its finest, but I can see how this did not hold up way back in 1977. If your a Disney fan this a so much fun to watch for the simple fact the park is here in all its 70s glory. If you here for the kids it is going to fall really short for you.

The Mouseketeers At Walt Disney World is a television special that exists during a time when Disney wasn’t doing exceptionally well with the exception of its theme parks.  I can not bring myself to hate this and under the current circumstance, I really fell in love with it. It's not great but it was just what I needed!

The good news is you do not need Disney Plus to watch it the same bootleg version is on Youtube so if your interested here you go The Mouseketeers at DisneyWorld. Sadly this is the Disney Channel Version with no commercials.

**I'm sure I missed this original airing on November 22, 1977, as it was the same day Walter Payton rushed for 275 a record that still stands today. (and now you know)**

Five Tunes you May Have Missed

There as been a ton of new music that seems to slip through the cracks right now. Let's take a look at five you may have missed. First up jumping on the Tiger King bandwagon...

And the Tiger King lives on...

The official video for Chris Cornell's tribute to Guns N' Roses classic song "Patience". After helping his daughter Toni learn the song, Chris Cornell got inspired in March of 2016 to record the song himself after hearing the news that Guns N' Roses were reuniting. Released in celebration of Chris's 56th birthday. Let me know in the comments how you feel about this cover, it's different but in a good way right?

Any time I can talk about one of my all-time favorite bands I'm going to! Enuff Z’Nuff’s new studio release, “Brainwashed Generation” showcases a diverse collection of songs that demonstrate the progression of musical styles in the Enuff Z’nuff catalog, all while retaining the undercurrent that has kept them a loyal fanbase since the ‘80s. PS this is the band's 21st album!

Phil Lewis and Tracii Guns are back and they have released a new single, 'Let You Down'. The song was written and recorded this past month while the band is in the midst of work on their next studio album. The band was so struck by the song that they felt the need to release it immediately rather than sit on it for the next studio album. This was the band I was to see on July 4th with Enuff Z'nuff, dang you Coronavirus.

With their lasting durability, iconic rock band Stryper returns with their 13th studio album, "Even the Devil Believes". Filled with the band’s signature riffs, harmony-laden melodies, and positive themes, the 11-track project is Stryper’s first studio album with Perry Richardson (Firehouse) on bass and background vocals.
