Music Monday For the Week of July 13th - July 19th.

July 13, 1939, Sinatra becomes a Heartthrob

Women swooned. Just a few years after he made his recording debut with the Harry James band on July 13, 1939, Frank Sinatra became a teenage heartthrob. Sinatra was more than just an overnight sensation. Unlike other pop artists, Sinatra's career didn't end after five or ten years but lasted more than half a century.

July 15, 1960, The Dance Craze!

When American rock artist Chubby Checker released his catchy pop song The Twist in 1960, few could have imagined that it would be responsible for a dance craze that would sweep the Western world in the early 1960s.

The dance itself had existed in its modern form since at least the late 1950s. Checker released his single in 1960 and it eventually claimed the top spot on September 19, 1960.

And there you have it, this week in music history.

Music Monday

Hi, all sure hope you had a nice Easter weekend. Let us take a look at what happened in music on April 13th.

Ah musicals, you know they are a big thing in this house so why not start with the Musical "Grease" closing at Broadhurst Theater NYC after 3,388 performances in 1980. I could not find any video's from that far back sorry. Grease was first performed in 1971 in the original Kingston Mines nightclub in Chicago (since demolished). From there, it has been successful on both stage and screen, but the content has been diluted and its teenage characters have become less Chicago habitués and more generic. At the time that it closed in 1980, Grease's 3,388-performance run was the longest yet in Broadway history, although it was surpassed by A Chorus Line on September 29, 1983. It went on to become a West End hit, a successful feature film, two popular Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007, and a staple of regional theatre, community theatre, and high school and middle school drama groups. It remains Broadway's 16th longest-running show.

Famous Illinionin Howard Keel was born in 1917 in Gillespie, Il in Southern Illinois. Keel was the Errol Flynn of the "golden age" of movie musicals back in the 1950s. His body of work includes "Camelot," "South Pacific", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Man of La Mancha", and "Show Boat". But most of us know him best when he replaced Jim Davis as the upstanding family patriarch of the nighttime soap drama Dallas (1978) after Davis' untimely death. Keel passed away at the age of 85 in 2004.

And on this day in 2013 Chi Cheng, the bassist for the Deftones died at the age of 42. Cheng had been involved in a car accident in 2008, which left him in a coma for some time. Although he eventually began showing signs of improvement, he was never able to make a full recovery. Cheng’s bass playing can be heard on such early Deftones classics as 1995’s Adrenaline, 1997’s Around the Fur, and 2000’s White Pony. Additionally, Cheng issued a spoken word release in 2000, The Bamboo Parachute.

Well, that's it pretty slow day in music. A ton of music news for next week so stay tuned!

Peace

Just a Small Taste of My Summer!

Saliva and Puddle of Mudd hit the stage not far from our house that leads to a quick road trip for my brother and me.

Sadly I had to work for Jackyl but seems like they put on a good show.

Video Killed The Radio Star on This Date 1981

Cashing in on a new form of popular entertainment, the MTV network debuts, complete with "video jockeys" (VJs) introducing music videos today in 1981. The first video shown, 'Video Killed the Radio Star,' will prove partially prophetic.

#NationalFilmScoreDay

Today is National Film Score Day you know because every day is something right? But this one is pretty cool so I thought why not post 5 scores that still blow me away outside of the Star Wars theme.

Number five is the main title track from the new Evil Dead "I'll Rip Your Soul Out" I just love this song.

Number four is fairly new to me and that is the main theme of Tourist Trap it is so quirky yet creepy at the same time.

Number Three goes back a bit Ennio Morricone's Orca soundtrack was one of the first soundtracks I received as a kid and it still sticks with me to this day.

Number Two If John Williams was not on the list I would not be normal right? Crazy as it sound's E.T. is by far my favorite.

And of Course one would need Han's Zimmer as well. The Backdraft soundtrack still ranks high on my list.

So what is your go to score? Let me know in the comments below and Happy National Film Score Day.

New Midnight Syndicate July 19th

On July 19th, Midnight Syndicate will release it's sixteenth studio album, "Monsters of Legend." This "tribute to the golden age of horror" will feature sweeping symphonic horror instrumental music and sound effects in the signature style the band pioneered. "We want to make you feel like you are a character in one of those classic horror films - that you've entered a world where any one of the iconic ch...aracters from the Universal Horror Films and Hammer Films could be right around the corner," said composer Edward Douglas.

The CD artwork features original images from classic Universal Studios Entertainment horror movies including Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Werewolf of London, and Dracula. "Listeners will hear the influence of the Universal Monster, Hammer, and Euro Horror films from the 30s through the 70s, not only in the music but in the images the songs conjure," added Gavin Goszka. Although the band promises the new disc will deliver the dark atmosphere haunted attractions, roleplaying gamers, and Halloween enthusiasts expect from them, they feel they've crafted a disc that transcends their favorite time of the year. "As we did on Carnival Arcane, we're always trying to take things up a notch both musically and with the sound design. There is a lot going on in this one. Plenty to pull you in, spark your imagination, and keep hold of you anytime you're looking to visit that mysterious place in your mind's eye."

The CD will be available for pre-order the first week in July. In addition to other new merchandise, Entity Productions Halloween Music will be releasing a special edition 12" vinyl version of the "Monsters of Legend" album, hand-numbered and limited to 250 copies.

Howlin' Wolf Records is proud to present the score for BEREAVEMENT by writer/director/composer Stevan Mena. BEREAVEMENT is the prequel to Mena's debut directorial feature MALEVOLENCE, the first score released by Howlin' Wolf Records in 2009. To bolster the action, chase, and suspense there is also a healthy dose of frenzied arrangements, roars, and pounding chords. BEREAVEMENT also features cello arrangements by composer Jeff Grace on a number of cues as well as a gritty ballad Acid Tears written by Bryan Harmony and Larry Werner, performed by the band Spitshine. The pressing for BEREAVEMENT is strictly limited to 500 copies.

For a limited time, orders placed on the Howlin' Wolf Records website will ship with an additional insert booklet autographed by writer/director/composer Stevan Mena. This offer is only available while very limited supplies last.
