Lugosi and Svengoolie Kick Off Halloween Tonight!

The Return of the Vampire
1943 | B&W | 1 Hr 9 Min | Horror | NR | Columbia Pictures
Director: Lew Landers

Writers: Griffin Jay (screenplay)
Kurt Neumann (based upon an idea by)

Stars:
Bela Lugosi
Frieda Inescort
Nina Foch

Synopsis:
In 1918, an English family is terrorized by a vampire, until they learn how to deal with it. They think their troubles are over, but German bombs in WWII free the monster. He reclaims the soul of his wolfman ex-servant, and assuming the identity of a scientist who has just escaped from a concentration camp, he starts out on a plan to get revenge upon the family.

Bela Lugosi's final top billing comes to the small screen tonight. This also appears to be the first horror film ever made in which both a vampire and a werewolf are characters, anticipating Universal's House of Frankenstein (1944) (released 11 months later) and House of Dracula (1945), as well as the recent "Underworld" and "Twilight" movies.

Watch 'The Return of the Vampire' at 8PM | 7C, Saturday, October 6, on MTV.

  1. I just finished watching this on tonight's Svengoolie! I enjoyed this one and actually found the ending pretty inspiring. Nice blog background, by the way.
