And it Begins! The Canceling of Halloween...

Well, the first of many sad days upon us as California's Los Angeles County becomes the first to say no to Trick or Treaters. The L.A. County Department of Public Health put out guidance on how to celebrate Halloween safely, saying some of the traditional ways of celebrating do "not allow you to minimize contact with non-household members."

According to the report Trick-or-treating at houses is not permitted and neither are "trunk-or-treating" events, in which children go from car to car instead of door to door. Gatherings and parties with non-household members, as well as festivals, live entertainment, and haunted houses, are also not permitted.

Instead, the L.A. County Department of Public Health suggests people celebrate with online parties or contests, Halloween movie nights at drive-in theaters, Halloween themed meals at outdoor restaurants, Halloween art installations at outdoor museums, and home and yard decorations. *Sigh* the online thing is fine but it is getting rather old.

Regardless of how people choose to celebrate, the county's department of health says it is important to follow ongoing health guidance like wearing a mask, keeping social distance, frequently washing hands, and staying home if you are sick.

With all of this being released today I know Illinois will be making an announcement like this in the near future. It's a bummer and I really understand but we have to find a way to keep the Halloween magic alive this year.

My youngest said this year we will be having Halloween parades just like we did for birthdays, and she just might be right. So how do you guys feel about this decision? What are your thoughts that families can do this year for trick or treating?

  2. It's sad, but inevitable. Showing off your costumes online is probably the best option. Like having a blog hop.

    1. I think the Halloween Blog hops are going to be huge this year. Canada is doing everything right during this should be interesting to see how they handle Halloween. And to think I had that offer to move to the Great White North.

  3. Look for corn mazes and pumpkin patches - outdoor events you can do with safe spacing.

    1. Corn Mazes yes! Man I sure hope the Pumpkin Patches can survive this as well. Already took the weekend off in October to do our yearly visit.

  4. Agree that it is said but inevitable. I can just see other counties in California doing the same. I live in Hollister, CA, in San Benito County. Not a lot happens in this county and town, but there are usually Halloween parties at the bars that will likely be canceled. Our town had zombie run for a couple years (none last year). I still don't know if I feel like celebrating.

    1. Yeah Halloween on a Saturday was something all the bars where looking forward to. I'm sure around here they will still pack them in. This past weekend a bar kept a music festival going it was arm in arm packed. I bet if you found the right spooky book that might change your mind a little.

  5. I don't know what's going on in my town for Halloween yet. I was planning on stringing a line across the driveway and clothespin treat bags to it so parents could grab one for their kid without having to interact face to face.
I'm really curious to see what's going to go down in Salem on Halloween night. A lot of the usual activities have been cancelled for October but you can't just keep thousands of people out of the city for one night.
