Director:

Writers:
Scott Corbett (book), Stephen Manes (teleplay)

Stars:

Synopsis:
Two young boys, Todd & Bill, go snooping into an alleged haunted house as a club initiation. One of the upstairs rooms was supposedly inhabiting a ghost by the name of Jamie Bly, who was a young boy who burned in the room years before. He had a dog, as well. The entire mansion was filled with ghosts, from Bly to his old caretaker, to the maid, to everything. This episode featured the misadventures of the two boys as they entered the property & wandered inside the mansion.

This wildly entering Saturday Morning Special based on Robert Corbett's short story will send a chill down your spine. After watching a few of these "Scary" type kid shows in preparation for Halloween I have quickly discovered why so many of us 80s kids love scary things. Shows like this just might not have made it on tho the small screen today! This is not overly intense like a few others I will be discussing as we creep closer to Halloween, but most kids will want to leave the lights on while watching. Side note the Vincent Price gag is worth the watch alone.

The Red Room Riddle: A Ghost Story was first published in 1972 and the ABC Saturday Morning Special first aired on February 5th of 1983. It would later air at a more appropriate day and time on October 20,1984. This would also be the complete version I watched today. Thanks to The Museum of Classic Chicago Television they have made this one available to watch in all its glory including some of those wonderful toy commercials for Cap'n Crunch's Choco-Crunch, Crystal Barbie from Mattel, Cabbage Patch Kids album and cassette, and the C.L.A.W. Action Wagon from Tonka.

Oh, those wonderful toys of the 80s.

Our ghost in the story was played by Christian Hoff who would win a Tony in 2006 for Playing Tommy DeVito in the Award-winning Broadway show "Jersey Boys."  and would also lend a voice to Freckles Friendly on The Richie Rich/ Scooby-Doo Show. In the same year, child actor Billy Jayne would show up on the big screen to scare us once again as Brett Chamber in Cujo. Of course, but I will always remember him from the TV show Silver Spoons. And last, the scaredy-cat played by Nicholas Gilbert would only show up on film one more time as a bully in the Never Ending Story. The three hold the show together pulling off this fun little ghost story.

If you are looking for a short little ghost story to get the Halloween spirit juices flowing The Red Room Riddle is a fun little ride that will help get you there. The old commercials are a hoot and you really should fight the urge to fast forward. Sadly the video is an old VHS from 1984 so it will be a bit graining and dark but the story will keep you focused.

5 Ideas for a Spooky Quarantine Halloween

While Halloween might look different this year, that doesn't mean it should be boring.

Who would have thought way back in March we would still be social distancing? And how it would still affect us in October? However, given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, we will have to take some precautions to make sure your Halloween is safe. Where just going to need to put some more thought into this year's spooky celebrations, with a little magic we can still make it fun. Here are a few safe ideas for your quarantined Halloween.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Already a great fall tradition, with so many pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and farms implementing social distancing protocols for their visitors this should remain on high on your to-do list. Make sure to grab some apple cider and Pumpkin Butter while you're there.

Decorate Your House

And I mean big time! Channel your Christmas spirit this year for Halloween. Nothing is more magical to a child then that warm glow of string lights. Grab a scarecrow, decorative gourds, and maybe even some hay to elevate your porch this year. Let's make it spooky!

Take a Drive or Hike

We are truly blessed to live in Starved Rock Country (pictured above) here but if your not close to a State Park October still brings stunning fall foliage to most areas. A perfect way to embrace the season is to take a drive and observe the changing leaves. Better yet, hope outside of your car and fully immerse yourself in the cool crisp autumn air with a nature hike.

Halloween Playlist

From "Thriller" to the "Monster Mash" there are way more Halloween-themed tunes than you'd expect.  So, build a playlist that fits your tastes and let the costumed dance party begin. Also as a side note, many of the bloggers taking part in the Halloween Countdown this year will be posting about there favorite Halloween tunes throughout the month of October.

Decorate Halloween Themed Face Masks

Nothing says "2020 Halloween" like decorating a face mask. Whether you're doing it for yourself or with your kids, make your mask match your costume or have it be a costume in itself. Better yet make a few extra and donate them to your local nursing home they will love it. Of course, animal faces, creepy grins, or a pumpkin pattern, will always be a hit.

This all came about when last week L.A. County pretty much canceled Halloween's door to door festivities. Halloween is a big deal around the Man Cave I was thinking about what can be done. So if you like these make sure to come back next week for five more or maybe ten the mind is overflowing right now. Never the less we need to keep the Halloween spirit high this year.

The First of Many Halloween Hootenanny Songs!

Let's kick off the spooky season a little early this year! I think we all could use a little fun around the house so crank up some Halloween inspired tunes and dance!

The Ghost In You - The Psychedelic Furs

Ghosts - Ladytron

Lust For A Vampyr - I Monster

Cemetary Waltz - Two Steps From Hell

Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell

And that's just the tip of the iceberg join me every Monday now through Halloween for more groovy tunes to howl at the moon.

Killer Rabbits Tonight on Svengoolie

 Night of The Lepus

1972 | PG | 1 Hour 28 Minutes | Horror | MGM

Cole Hillman's Arizona ranch is plagued with 'mongrel' rabbits, and he wants to employ an ecologically sound control method. As a favor to college benefactor Hillman, college president Elgin Clark calls in zoologist Roy Bennett to help. Bennett immediately begins injecting rabbits with hormones and genetically mutated blood in an effort to develop a method of disrupting rabbit reproduction. One of the test subjects escapes, resulting in a race of bloodthirsty, wolf-sized, man-, horse-, and cow-eating bunnies. Eventually, the National Guard is called in for a final showdown with the terrorizing rabbits.

Wow, I have never seen Night of the Lepus looking forward to Killer Rabbits! I mean come on the killer rabbit effects were created mostly by normal-sized rabbits running around on miniature sets. A man in a rabbit suit was used for some attack scenes this is pure gold baby! For the attack scenes, ketchup was smeared on the rabbits' faces to simulate blood.

So have you seen Night of the Lepus? Am I in for a trick or a treat?

And it Begins! The Canceling of Halloween...

Well, the first of many sad days upon us as California's Los Angeles County becomes the first to say no to Trick or Treaters. The L.A. County Department of Public Health put out guidance on how to celebrate Halloween safely, saying some of the traditional ways of celebrating do "not allow you to minimize contact with non-household members."

According to the report Trick-or-treating at houses is not permitted and neither are "trunk-or-treating" events, in which children go from car to car instead of door to door. Gatherings and parties with non-household members, as well as festivals, live entertainment, and haunted houses, are also not permitted.

Instead, the L.A. County Department of Public Health suggests people celebrate with online parties or contests, Halloween movie nights at drive-in theaters, Halloween themed meals at outdoor restaurants, Halloween art installations at outdoor museums, and home and yard decorations. *Sigh* the online thing is fine but it is getting rather old.

Regardless of how people choose to celebrate, the county's department of health says it is important to follow ongoing health guidance like wearing a mask, keeping social distance, frequently washing hands, and staying home if you are sick.

With all of this being released today I know Illinois will be making an announcement like this in the near future. It's a bummer and I really understand but we have to find a way to keep the Halloween magic alive this year.

My youngest said this year we will be having Halloween parades just like we did for birthdays, and she just might be right. So how do you guys feel about this decision? What are your thoughts that families can do this year for trick or treating?

It's Here My Long List of What I watched in August.

Wow, its September already! I know so many people are ready for the fall and our happy place of Pumpkin spice, rustling leaves, and cooler weather. This was a summer for the history books that is for sure. That week in August with no power killed my vacation movie-watching plans hard but was still able to check out a few shorts on Disney+ along with a few documentaries. This was also the last few weeks of Full Moon Horror Streaming site so I had to capitalize on that early on so the horror movie genera received some much-needed love.  So here you go the full list of my August viewing for Your pleasure.

This documentary captures the extraordinary twists and turns in the journeys of Rubik's Cube-solving champions Max Park and Feliks Zemdegs. You really find yourself rooting for Max who has autism and the friendship he has with Feliks. This is the heart and soul of the story as the Cube solving takes a backseat. Never the less this was a fun little story the runs a fas 45 minutes. All of us on the couch was amazed by the story.

Roger Rabbit once again is chosen for the dangerous task of babysitting Baby Herman and everything is going to be just fine. I remember working at the theatre when this was a big deal. This short played just before Honey I Shrink the Kids even getting a predominate spot on the poster shouting this one out. Nothing over the top crazy for me tho but then again I'm one of those rare birds that do not like Roger Rabbit.

Nerdy Walter Paisley (Dick Miller), a maladroit busboy at a beatnik café who doesn’t fit in with the cool scene around him, attempts to woo his beautiful co-worker, Carla (Barbara Morris), by making a bust of her. When his klutziness results in the death of his landlady’s cat, he panics and hides its body under a layer of plaster. But when Carla and her friends enthuse over the resulting artwork, Walter decides to create some bigger and more elaborate pieces using the same artistic process.  You know I really wanted to like this one. I watched the Dick Miller documentary and that really pushed me in this direction. Miller is wonderful and Morris needed more acting jobs she was a "Cool Cat" sadly the story is a tad rough around the edges. If I did not watch this right after the documentary I may have enjoyed it more.

Lighthearted comedy chronicling the exploits of the employees at a record store. Came for Tim Thomerson but really enjoyed Ted Lange! Goofy 70s vibe with no real story involving the record store but still Worth the visit. With so much Cheese you will need to bring an extra bag of nachos.

At the dawn of the space race, two radio-obsessed teens discover a strange frequency over the airwaves in what becomes the most important night of their lives and in the history of their small town. I love period pieces like this I love small town 50s period pieces the most sadly this one just did not do it for me. I'm like the only one too the average rating on letterboxd is 3 1/2 stars. Something just did not hit right for me.

Though legendary lyricist Howard Ashman died far too young, his impact on Broadway, movies, and the culture at large was incalculable. Told entirely through rare archival footage and interviews with Ashman’s family, friends, associates, and longtime partner Bill Lauch, Howard is an intimate tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent and a rousing celebration of musical storytelling itself.

Not quite the tear-jerker I was expecting. A fantastic story of Howard's life that all Disney fans should watch.
