Camp Food Is Good!

Oh, camp food how much I miss you already, NOT! Sure we give camp food a bunch of crap all the time but this year it was not as bad as you would think. Sure the portions are small in fact too small for adults but in my eyes, it's the best diet plan ever. The food, for the most part, is so gross that we all eat salad every meal and crave the ranch dressing that they use but not this year we actually ate so here is a look back on the five best meals of the week.

Number 5

Teriyaki chicken was not bad in fact it was tender and juicy it did come with a side but I can not remember for the life of me what it was but we did not grab it. I think Steve went with the salad this day. Well, I liked it anyway.

Number 4

Now, this was one heck of a meal! The coleslaw was not bad pulled pork was really good and heck even vanilla pudding with cookie crumbles on top hell to the yes! Yeah looking good baby.

Number 3

When we had a bad meal come up I stuck to Hardboiled eggs, cheese, and yes a drizzle of that wonderful Ranch dressing. It might look gross but it kept me alive for the week.

Number 2

It's hard to screw up a hamburger right? This burger was cooked well and still juicy! Pretty sure I grabbed two of these and that brownie was not bad too. The fries tho mmmm nope they were hard as a rock!

Number 1

Ok going to cheat here, on Friday one of the mom's sent our cabin homemade lasagna to die for! This was so good I was full from eating it the rest of the day! So as you can see camp food was not so bad, we did have so really gross meals as well like pork chops (Steve and I went back for more lasagna that night) a really gross spaghetti and some kind of brisket that was well heartburn city that day.

Bonus feature:

What was this? Let me know your guesses in the comments below. My girls claim its burnt mash potatoes.

Rita Crundwell is a Turd!

All The Queen's Horses
2017 | Color | 1 Hr 10 Min | Documentary | PG-13 | Kartemquin Films

Director: Kelly Richmond Pope

Rita Crundwell stole more than $53 million of public funds across two decades in office as the City Comptroller and Treasurer for Dixon, Illinois, a town with a population of just 16,000. She used the funds to build one of the nation’s leading quarter horse breeding empires and threw lavish parties for community leaders at her home, all while the town endured cuts to public staff, emergency services budgets, and work on maintaining public infrastructure. In 2012 after a close colleague turned whistleblower finally uncovered her scheme and alerted the Mayor, the FBI arrested Crundwell as the largest municipal fraud perpetrator in American history.

How did Rita Crundwell steal an average of over $220,000 a month from a town with an annual budget of around $6 million? How could such embezzlement go undetected in annual audits by two independent accounting firms and in annual audit reviews by state regulators? How did local residents not become suspicious of Crundwell’s extravagant wealth and frivolous spending?

All The Queens Horses sheds lite on how a member of the community could so callously execute a scam of such magnitude. This film reveals how she did it and got away with it for so long, how she was caught, how the city is attempting to rebuild and recover, and how if it happened in Dixon, it could happen anywhere.

I'm pretty sure my jaw was on the ground the whole time watching, living in a small town where everybody knows your business this baffles me to no end. And being only 35 miles from Dixion I can not help but wonder how this lady built here empire and nobody put two and two together. I mean come on if she did not make a mistake so could have gone on to be a billionaire while Dixon went bankrupt. This doc gave we the whirlwind of emotions from hate to empathy to just plain disgust. All the Queens Horses is truly worth your time.

They came. They saw. They rocked.

Detroit Rock City
1999 | Color | 1 Hr 35 Min | Comedy | R | New Line Cinema

Director:
Adam Rifkin

Writer:
Carl V. Dupré

Stars:
Edward Furlong
Giuseppe Andrews
James DeBello

Synopsis:
Four members of a high school band called Mystery do everything they can to attend a KISS concert in Detroit. In order to make it to the show, they must steal, cheat, strip, deal with an anti-rock mom and generally do whatever it takes to see the band that has inspired them to be musicians.

Ok it was finally my pick at camp and our cabin theme was Rock and Roll so I picked Detroit Rock City just to see if it holds up after all these years. You know what is odd about this coming of age rock fest? Adam Rifkin, you know the guy who wrote Underdog, Overboard, and Small Soldiers all solid flick's but when it comes to directing we get Chillarma's Wadzilla (Yeah its fantastic but have you seen it?) and Charlie Sheen's the Case. What I'm trying to say is the man is a genius in both Horror and Family Flicks yet Detroit Rock City is the perfect love letter to the rockers of the late 70's when disco was the shit.

It's almost 20 years old and holds up like a true classic, from its killer young cast, the stellar soundtrack, and a backdrop that brings the 70's back into the living room. And let's not forget a still very beautiful Shannon Tweed (Gene Simmon's Partner) that show's up at right time. The movie never gets dull with smart writing by Carl V. Dupre who oddly has only given us a few movies two of them being the later of the Hellraiser series yet his writing keep's us moving through the day as we take the trip to Detroit.

With plenty of Kiss merch everywhere it was fun to learn that the merch used in the film is from Gene Simmons personal collection. And of course, if you did not catch it the two girls in the movie are named Beth (Melanie Lynskey) and Christine, (Natasha Lyonne) a reference to the KISS songs "Beth" and "Christine Sixteen".  Plus this would make for a great drinking game as the words "fuck", "fucking" or "fucker" are said 83 in the short 90-minute runtime that leads to a ton of shots!

I loved Detroit Rock City the first time I watched it and I still love it 19 years later, its silly, its crude, and it helps stomp out disco. If you have not seen this flick what are you waiting for? This road trip buddy movie is fun from beginning to end.

For me, it's still a solid...

The movie did not give Steve the 70's vibe for him...

The Time Warp Horizon Camp Style!

Rocky Horror Picture Show
1975 | Color | 1 Hr 40 Min | Musical | R | 20th Century Fox

Director:
Jim Sharman

Writers:
Richard O'Brien
Jim Sharman

Stars:
Tim Curry
Susan Sarandon
Barry Bostwick

Synopsis:

A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

So instead of reviewing a movie that I'm sure 80% of my readers have seen, I'm going to talk about how awesome it was to watch this at camp under the star's complete with props and yes virgins! Yep, this year's movie night was The Rocky Horror Picture Show and it was a blast! For those of you at camp that watched Dumb and Dumber, I'm truly sorry.

Yeah, We Have Prop's Baby.

Oh and yeah we had all the necessities needed bird seed, newspapers, water guns, party hats and so on. The guys putting on the show did a knock out job. It was an absolute blast hearing people yell Asshole and Slut as well as singing along. Being an adult camp I would have to say I was blindsided by how many sitting among us had never seen this classic. Isn't there some kind of law that states you can not turn 20 without watching this movie??

Brandon setting up Drive-Ine In

I do feel kind of bad as the group in front of us had no clue what to expect, when it was time to throw the rice (Birdseed) everybody in front of us ducked for cover having no clue what was going on as the rain shower from us was leashed upon them. I mean I felt bad but still could not stop laughing as the had no clue what was happing.

Katy and Gerry in the back of the pickup truck

The cool brisk air defiantly helped with the vibe giving us the true feel of being at a drive-in or in our case a roll in. This little drive in came complete with a makeshift concession stand to supply our needs with hot dogs, pizza, chips, and more. I know you're super jealous right now, that's ok we missed you.

Jacob and I parting down!

As the night went on the party slowly shifted as you could tell the newbies were totally getting into the flick and us veterans kind of sat back and enjoyed it with them. Needless to say, the movie was a hit and many people were still talking about it the next day. It made me really happy to hear people talk about watching it again just to catch all the things they missed.

Steve and Geri having a good time.

A huge thank you to Brandon and Geoff for putting on one heck of a fun show the crowd really enjoyed it. The dynamic duo also gave us another activity I will cover next week lets just say it was a blast as well. Thanks again, guys.

For me, this movie will always have a high rating of:

4 Bloody Brains out of 5

And for Steve he gives this staple a solid:

3 Bloody Brains out of 5

Fear What Happens Next.

Pandorum
2009 | Color | 1 Hr 48 Min | Horror | R | Anchor Bay

Director: Christian Alvart

Writers:
Travis Milloy

Stars:
Dennis Quaid
Ben Foster
Cam Gigandet

Two crew members are stranded on a spacecraft and quickly - and horrifically - realize they are not alone. Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It's pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creaks from the belly of the ship. They can't remember anything: Who are they? What is their mission? With Lt. Payton staying behind to guide him via radio transmitter, Cpl. Bower ventures deep into the ship and begins to uncover a terrifying reality. Slowly the spacecraft's shocking, deadly secrets are revealed...and the astronauts find their own survival is more important than they could ever have imagined.

Orbital Dysfunctional Syndrome or Pandorum witch is a psychotic break which takes place amongst ship's captains when they become convinced a mission is cursed, essentially a descent into madness brought on by the pressures of life in space impinging on an individual's sense of paranoia. Of course, this is fictional as for the second movie Steve and I watched over the past week at camp this one was nuts! Christian Alvart might not be a household name here in the states but he should be, and maybe after the sequel Django Lives he might be. Alvart gives us nice tight quarters on a big ship feel surrounded by doom and gloom that looks amazing.

Dennis Quad is not my favorite actor and most likely the reason I did not see this movie sooner. In the end, he really delivered the good's as a captain of the ship. Ben Foster was a little dull almost giving you the feeling that he did not want to be there but as the film goes on you realize you are drawn into his charter acting this way and by the end, you realize this was a genius move on his part. It's also worth mentioning MMA fighter turned actor Cung Le who add's some serious pop to the cast and looks really badass.

With Stan Winston's studio behind the special effects to go along with an amazing looking set, you quickly find yourself getting closterphobic as this team tries to stay alive while getting to the reset button somewhere on the ship before time runs out. The pace is also driven by Michl Britsch who as well should be doing so much more in Holywood! His score keeps the movie dark without overloading you into depression and giving you chill's as he plunges you down the rabbit hole. This movie although a slow burn is tightly woven together by a cast that is on point and visual style that keeps you interested.

This movie is well worth your attention its makers deserve to be heard as well from the director, cinematographer, art department and so on Pandorum is a fun psychological thriller at its core with a science fiction horror element to drive you into insanity. It's a fun ride that I wish  I jumped on so much sooner!

For me, Pandorum gets a solid...

3 out of 5

and oddly enough Steve who recommended we watch this flick only gives it...

Judgment is Coming - Camp Edition

Dredd
2012 | Color | 1 Hr 35 Min | Action | R | Lionsgate

Director: Pete Travis

Writers:
John Wagner (characters)
Carlos Ezquerra

Stars:
Karl Urban
Olivia Thirlby
Lena Headey

In the future, the overpopulated and chaotic Mega-City One with 800 million inhabitants occupies the former territory between Boston and Washington and is surrounded by desert. Justice is brought by the judges, who have the power to judge and execute the sentence against those who break the law. The incorruptible Judge Dredd is summoned by the Chief Judge to evaluate the rookie Anderson, who has failed the test for judge but is a mutant with psychic abilities. They witness a murder and chase the killer in a 200-floor building. However the laboratory of slo-mo of the drug lord Ma-Ma is located on the 200th floor and she seals the building, trapping the two judges inside. Then she orders her clan to kill Dredd and Anderson at the beginning of a gore manhunt.

It's no secret that at camp Steve and I bring movies, games, and yes a TV you never know when the weather is going to stink. Whether it be cold or too hot to even rain so we come prepared in fact on Tuesday it came down to just simply being tired. So when we decided to just chill and it was time for a movie. Sadly Steve's pick Dredd read on followers if you must...

Let's get this out of the way now Karl Urban for me was no Sylvester Stalone. In fact, he really annoyed the crap out of me although he did a good job sticking to the comic book were the helmet never comes off unlike pretty boy Stalone. Don't be fooled it is also the slow pace and boring storyline that takes place over one day that keeps you yawning. The sound effects and soundtrack are the only saving grace when it comes to Dredd and it did its part keeping me mildly interested.

Steve truly feels like I'm a fool for not getting into this action-packed redux and his love for Lean Headey who I guess is a queen in Game of Thrones (Something else I just can not get into) being totally badass, and this is where we agree Ma-Ma (Headey) ranks up there with Batman's Joker as being a hardass that shows no mercy I really liked her part and she killed it. One other part I found to be cool was the slow-motion effects used for the Slo-Mo drug but in the end, it was hard for me to stay awake as for Dredd and it's lackluster charters that I just could not latch onto made for a very boring action flick.

Sorry, Steve, I can only give Dredd...

2 Star's out of 5
Steve disagree's with me going with...

3 Star's out of 5
And he also highly recommends Dredd!
