Fifty Cars Are Pounded Into a Mass of Twisted Metal

Crash!

Director: Charles Band

Writer: Marc Marais

Cast:

John Carradine
Jerome Guardino

What dark powers possess the mysterious trinket?
When his patient Kim is nearly killed in a motor accident, Dr. Martin decides to investigate.
His only clue is a strange trinket which Kim has clutched since her crash. An occult expert tells him it is Akasa – a Hittite God of revenge and destruction.
Meanwhile Kim’s car, apparently unmanned, rampages the roads causing carnage and disaster…

Crash is one of the first movies in Charles Bands still growing film career. After countless bootlegs, hard to find VHS tapes and never released on DVD, Full Moon Streaming has premiered this new widescreen version for all the uber fans out there. How does a 1970's movie about a killer car hold up. In my mind very well. The movie will keep you in your seat so make sure you have plenty of popcorn.

Sue Lyon as Kim Denne
The look and feel of Crash if felt throughout the movie and captured the era quite well. From the great looking car to its wonderful cast. The opening scene is my only gripe it was kind of out of place but I believe it was there to set the tone of the movie. As a couple of hippies get chased down by the car early and hit a little tree and explode. I will give props to the slow motion and a few camera angles used to make it look good. Soon after Kim heads to a open market where she is drawn to the occult object Akaza, the God of Vengeance! The Akaza will soon take possession of a driverless car and causes one spectacular Crash after another.

The Akaza!

Crash! will bring to mind other killer car films The Car and The Hearse but believe it or not Band's film beat them both to the box office will little to no fanfare or success. Yet this movie is much easier to sit through then the Car witch is a movie I hold near and dear to me. One of the best scenes in the movie came from the dog that attacks Kim by jumping into the top of a moving car. Shortly  after Kim takes over a wheelchair and kills her husbands dog that was both new and funny to me and one of the more disturbing moments in the movie.

Yep that's Charles Band Himself

Full Moon Streaming also has an audio commentary by producer/director Charles Band himself and he is joined by veteran filmmaker David DeCoteau. The two do a good job talking about the film and its cast. I was a little let down with Charlie himself the guy is a great story teller but he has worked on so many things that he does not remember has much as the fans would like. With that being said I would hope Band will sit down and work on commentary's for his newer films. Never the less they give you a good insight to the film. All though they did not like the sound track and made many points to apologize for it. I say they are wrong the soundtrack brings you into the 70's vibe very well.

The Heat is on.
In conclusion if you like the 70's or car case movies this is for you. If you just want to visit on of Charles Bands most important films to start his career then this is a must. You will have no trouble getting through 85 minutes. I will be adding Crash! to my collection once it hits Blu-Ray. You can currently see Crash! on Full Moon Streaming and on DVD.
Over all I give Uncle Charlie...

A Nightmare On Elm Street: The Dream Dealers

It's a step into the future. Dreams can be recorded and played back as a form of entertainment on the DreamBox. To create one thrilling DreamBox program, dreams have been teased out of the preserved brains of Freddy Krueger's past victims. This program is being tested on a group of teenagers who not only experience the dreams of Freddy's former victims, but also begin having their own dangerous nightmares. One of the kids has made a pirate copy of the program and is creating free access to it via the Internet. That would mean the evil influence of Freddy Krueger would go global.

I Saw What You Did To My Black Cat!

To keep up with my Vacation movie marathon last night was time to clean up my Tivo a little bit and watch a few Svengoolie's from the past month. First up

Black Cat (1934)

Bela Lugosi and Bori Karloff teamed up for the first of six pairings, this time in a story about a young couple traveling by train through Hungary (always a bad idea in the movies). They meet Dr. Vitus Werdegast (Lugosi) on the train, a psychiatrist who’s going to visit his Austrian friend, Hjalmar Poelzig (Karloff), who’s spent the last 15 years in a notorious prison camp. But the train crashes, the young woman is injured, and the trio ends up journeying to the forboding home of Poelzig. Bad things happen after that. Poelzig, by the way, was based in part on infamous British occultist Aleister Crowley.

There is a lot to like here. The custom where iconic the musical score was spot on and the first to run an entire movie. Of course the cast was wonderful. But two things really stuck out in my mind for a 1934 movie. The house and its interior where just as much a character in the movie as the two stars. The metallic look the hard angles made for a fun watch.

But the thing I enjoyed the most was the camera work. John J. Mescall who was the Cinematographer on more than 90 movies really shined in this one. He really got down to different levels for his abstract angles and off center movement that you can see in the works of today's greats like Sam Rami. His use of shadow and light where brilliant at times. This added to the film in such a wonderful way.

If you have not seen Black Cat yet you owe it to your self. Karloff's outfit is amazing and Lugosi is fantastic as always. This is a great team with a fun package from camera angles to music that make this a fun watch.

Black Cat I give you

30th Anniversay NO WAY!

Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release a 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Edition of director John Hughes' The Breakfast Club (1985), starring Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy. The release will be available for purchase on March 10, 2015.

Synopsis: They were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had nothing to say, but by 4 p.m. they had bared their souls to each other and become good friends. John Hughes creator of the critically acclaimed Sixteen Candles, wrote, directed and produced this hilarious and often touching comedy starring Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. To the outside world they were simply the Jock, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess and the Kook, but to each other, they would always be The Breakfast Club.

Special Features:
Digitally Remastered and Fully Restored From 35mm Original Film Elements
Accepting the Facts: The Breakfast Club Trivia Track
Sincerely Yours
The Most Convenient Definitions: The Origins of The Brat Pack
Theatrical Trailer
Feature Commentary with Anthony Michael Hall and Judd Nelson

I'm in denial this movie is not 30 years old! But will pick up the Blu on this classic. I remember reading that Hughes wrote a sequel but do to the fighting between Judd Nelson and Hughes it never happened. That's a bummer now excuse me as I run through the house singing I want to be an airplane pilot.

The king arrives

Godzilla
2014 | Color | 123 Minutes | 2.35.1 | PG-13 | Action | DTS | Warner Brothers

Director: Gareth Edwards

Writers: Max Borenstein

Stars:
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Elizabeth Olsen
Bryan Cranston

In 1999, the Janjira nuclear plant was mysteriously destroyed with most hands lost including supervisor Joe Brody's colleague and wife, Sandra. Years later, Joe's son, Ford, a US Navy ordnance disposal officer, must go to Japan to help his estranged father who obsessively searches for the truth of the incident. In doing so, father and son discover the disaster's secret cause on the wreck's very grounds. This enables them to witness the reawakening of a terrible threat to all of Humanity, which is made all the worse with a second secret revival elsewhere. Against this cataclysm, the only hope for the world may be Godzilla, but the challenge for the King of the Monsters will be great even as Humanity struggles to understand the destructive ally they have.

Face off against the Muto

I have said it once and I will say it again Godzilla was the first film I watched hosted by Svengoolie (Gerry G Bishop back in the 70's) with my mother. I remember it being one of those super hot summer days that you could not do much outside in the heat. They seemed to have run many of those Godzilla movies in the coming years because I was hooked and could not get enough of them. Now I'm not one of those super fans or anything like that but I would like to go and visit G-Fest one of these days in Chicago.

Godzilla is the first truly joyous popcorn action movie I have seen this week so far. I did not want to get up in fear of missing something, I kept forgetting I could pause the movie. Sure Godzilla was not the star of his own movie and it works for me. He is a bit player that stands out and is almost as good looking as Elizabeth Olsen.

So many people out there bashed this movie for many things including to say this was not much better than the 1998 flick. I say they are wrong! Godzilla did not lose his touch in this movie at all. What you don't like that he is the HERO? So you did not watch all fan-beloved, kid-friendly G films? What is wrong with you Godzilla is a Hero! And this feels like a disaster movie... well yeah that is what makes Godzilla movies fun to watch the way he and his battle mate don't care what town they are destroying while the duke it out.

60 years after his first big screen appearance Godzilla 2014 nailed it. I can't wait for the day we see him take on King Kong or Mecha Godzilla on the big screen. I will not wait for this to hit the home theater and I will stop listing to my friends who obviously don't get it. If you're a fan of giant monsters you will like this movie if not it might come off as a snooze fest at times. But give yourself a chance to warm up to the big guy you might find yourself cheering on this lug of a lizard.

Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!
2014 | Color | 64 Minutes | 2.35.1 | NR | Comedy | DTS | SModcast Pictures

Director: Steve Stark

Writer: Kevin Smith

Stars:
Kevin Smith
Jason Mewes
Eliza Dushku

After winning $10,000,000 from a scratchcard they bought at the Quick Stop, Jay & Silent Bob decides to become superheroes Bluntman and Chronic (a parody of Batman and Robin). They build a secret fortress of solitude beneath RST Video and acquire all the necessary gadgets and accessories to make them ideal crime-fighters. They also hire their own butler, Albert (a parody of Alfred Pennyworth).

Throughout their crime-fighting ordeals, they manage to accidentally create a few super-powered enemies of their own, who together form "The League of Shitters". The League of Shitters consists of Lipstick Lesbian, Dickhead, NewsGroup, Cocknocker, and the Diddler. While at a ceremony in which Bluntman and Chronic are to be awarded the key to the city of Red Bank, The League of Shitters attack the dynamic duo and knock them unconscious. They then attempt to infiltrate the "Bluntcave", resulting in the deaths of NewsGroup and Diddler (they are crushed by a wall that reveals the entrance to the hideout). Lipstick Lesbian mortally stabs Albert in the back and places Bluntman and Chronic into a giant bong that is slowly filling up with water. After leaving the heroes to die, the villains descend upon Red Bank, killing everyone in their path. Albert uses the last of his strength to free the heroes before dying.

Vowing to avenge Albert, Bluntman and Chronic fly to Red Bank in the Blunt Jet to save the city from The League of Shitters' mayhem. An epic fight ensues in which Bluntman subdues Dickhead by tricking him into entering a gay bar and Chronic kills Cocknocker with a broken beer bottle. Lipstick Lesbian draws a gun and attempts to shoot Bluntman and Chronic, but they are miraculously saved by a new heroine, Bluntgirl. Bluntgirl defeats Lipstick Lesbian single-handedly and begins to show romantic interest in Bluntman. Chronic is jealous and expresses his desire for anal sex. Bluntgirl agrees to this, however, she penetrates Chronic with a dildo, much to Chronic's distaste. Bluntgirl asks Bluntman if he's ever experienced anything of the like, to which he replies, "Yeah, when Ben Affleck played Daredevil.". During the credits, it is noted that Jay and Silent Bob will return in Clerks III.

After the credits, Jay and Silent Bob are visited by Stan Lee, who wishes to speak to them about the "Avenger Initiative". Shortly after, they are all picked up by Doc Brown, who requests their help in getting back to the future.

Holy Shark repellent Bluntman this movie rocks! I never stopped laughing. I must warn you if you're not a fan of the Clerks movies this might not be your thing. They do a lot of pop culture references throughout there comic book world that they have built. Hell, I'm sure I missed a few references from time to time myself.

From being to end this movie had me rolling on the floor. Is it because I like poop and fart jokes I don't know. Was it the off-color sex jokes well maybe. None the less I had fun and that is all that matters. If you're not a fan I still say check this out you will know I the first 10 minutes if this is for you or not.

Brothers become legends.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2014 | Color | 101 Minutes | 2.35.1 | PG-13 | Action | Dolby Digital | Paramount Pictures

Director: Jonathan Liebesman

Writers: Josh Appelbaum

Stars:
Megan Fox
Will Arnett
William Fichtner

Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O'Neil and her cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder's diabolical plan.

So not sure where to start with this. I wanted to love this movie. I was a fan of the cartoon's and the first two movies. When the trailers hit early this year I was not sure how I felt about the new look of the turtles. A few minutes in the look of them was not the problem in fact they come off pretty cool. The plot on the other hand was horrific.

I feel like the plot is so all over the place within the first 20 minutes. They cram everything at you just to get into the action. Now the action scenes are fun at times and hard to watch the other times. For example the final battle is over the top CG that moves way to fast that this guy could not keep up. It is also the main reason I do not like the Transformers movies. You're never too sure where to watch or what you're seeing. And it was not just me my 6 year old struggled as well.

Overall I did not hate it but sure did not love it! It's worth a look when it hits cable or gets over played on Nickelodeon. I must admit that I had Vanilla Ice looping in my head Go Ninja Go Ninja Go... But this was surely not the way I wanted to kick off my I'm on vacation and plan to get caught up on a lot of movies before the end of the year! On the bright side it can't get any worse than this.

Caveman

Olive Films is set to bring us Caveman on BluRay this February. I could not get enough of this as a child. I do wonder if it will hold up over time.

The Beatles’ Ringo Starr is Atouk, the caveman of the title. As the leader of a rag-tag group of cavemen considered inferior by a larger group of cavemen, Atouk has his work cut out for him when he sets his sights on the beautiful Lana (Barbara Bach). Trouble is … Lana belongs to Tonda (John Matuszak) the leader of the “superior” cavemen. Undeterred, Atouk sets out to win Lana’s hand while being pursued by the caveman-crazy Tala (Shelley Long) and fending off some very hungry dinosaurs.

Caveman is directed by Carl Gottlieb (screenwriter Jaws).

Stimpy's First Fart

Long before South Park we had the loveable idiot Ren and Stimpy. And if you have not seen their classic Christmas special where Stimpy loses his Son which is a fart then you have not lived!

When Stimpy farts, he believes that he has given birth. He tells Ren about the incident and tries to fart in front of him to show him what happened, but it fails. When Ren refused to believe him, Stimpy relentlessly tries to find his fart, "Stinky." Stimpy first tries a Santa charity worker he sniffs his butt, but he can't find him, then he tries posters but no one is interested, next he tries the police he tells them of his missing "son" Stinky and describes him to a sketch artist annoyed with this the artist throws outside, Stimpy thinks he smells Stinky but it turns out to be manure Mr. Horse is selling, saddened by this he gives up and lies on the street where a car runs over his head. Stinky, as it turns out, is actually alive and is looking for Stimpy, but he can't find him since he's lying unconscious under the car, Stinky takes refuge between Stimpy's buttocks because they smell as bad as he does, but they notice the smell and try to kill him with matches so he hides in the sewer.

Meanwhile Ren is celebrating Christmas but he is depressed since Stimpy isn't there and he sadly takes out a present he got Stimpy and sings Christmas carols to himself while tearing up, he hears the doorbell and sees Stimpy frozen in a block of ice, Ren is overjoyed and brings Stimpy inside to thaw him out, Ren tries to make him feel better but he's still upset that he can't find Stinky, after some time the doorbell rings and Ren are shocked that Stinky actually exists so he brings him inside, Ren informs Stimpy that he has a visitor. He tells him he doesn't care until Ren gets him to sniff his finger which has Stinky's scent on it, Stimpy and Stinky are happy to be reunited, Stimpy tells him that they can be together forever but Stinky says they can't because he's grown up and engaged to Cora a rotting fish head, Stimpy marries them and they live in Ren's nose which he is not happy about.

"Son of Stimpy" made its home video debut on the Have Yourself a Stinky Little Christmas VHS, released by Sony Wonder on September 21, 1993. The video also contained music videos of the songs "Fleck the Walls" and "Cat Hairballs" from the album Ren & Stimpy's Crock O' Christmas.

This will forever live in my VHS collection! Here are the bonus songs from the tape that are available on CD that yes I own.
